QuickCount Data Tool

What is QuickCount?

QuickCount allows users to find the number of participants in a wide range of social services and systems — such as the number of people who were booked in jail, who visited the emergency room or who relied on publicly-funded homeless services.

You can sort by time period and filter the numbers by demographics such as race, age, location and more. You can also view the overlap of involvement in multiple systems and services.

How to use QuickCount

  • Step 1: Choose a time period.

Once you're in the QuickCount Tool, choose a time period to get data for. Filter by Calendar Year, School Year or Month, by clicking on the second row of tabs at the top.
  • Step 2: Select a primary program.

Select an initial program category to get data about. Once you select a category, you will be able to narrow down to a service within that category.
  • Step 3: Choose a specific service.

Within each primary program category, there is a list of specific services that you can choose from. For more details about each service, you can either click on “Program Definitions,” or hover over each service for a small description. You can change the program category on the left-hand side column, or click “back to category view.” You can toggle between “active” or “ever active.” Active refers to the time period you’ve chosen previously, while Ever Active means it will retrieve data for all time periods.
  • Step 4: Select Get Count OR choose another service to compare.

At this point you can either click the yellow “Get Count” button at the bottom of the page to get the data on this specific service, or you can choose a comparison program. The “Get Count” button will not appear until you’ve selected at least one specific service within a program category. For the comparison program, you can choose a service from any program category, it doesn’t need to be the same as the initial program category you chose. You can view which services you’ve selected on the right hand side under “Filters Applied.” If you change your mind, you can click on a service to remove it from the count.
  • Step 5: Filter the count.

You can also filter the count by Demographics, Geography, and Political District by clicking on the top row of tabs. As you click on each tab in the top row, the options in the second row of tabs will change to give subcategories of selections. These are all optional and work in the same way as the comparison program selection.
  • Step 6: View your results.

Click the yellow “Get Count” button at the bottom to retrieve your results. If you choose a comparison program, it will show the number of participants in each program, the number participating in both programs, and the number of individuals participating in either program. If you didn’t choose a comparison program, then it will only have the number of participants in the one service you selected.
  • Step 7: Navigate results.

To get more specific numbers, click on “View Breakdown” under the result category you’re interested in. From there, you can toggle between Legal Sex, Age, Race, or Ethnicity for specific numbers and graphs. You can always go back to “Program” and click “View Breakdown” for other categories. The default view if you don’t click on view breakdown will be for “Participating in Either Program.”
  • Step 8: View additional info.

If you scroll down further on the results page, you can expand the “Explanation of Results” and “What else should I know about this data” sections by clicking on “show.” This will provide more details about the data.
